Mark Johnson, RDI
Founder of Johnson Design Group
Mark Johnson started his career in retail working part time in the display department for Carson Pirie Scott & Co. Little did he know, in 1975, after he graduated from college with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Interior Design that he would begin a career in retail design. The 70’s were a time of retail expansion and the launch of the indoor mall. Shortly before graduation, he was recruited by a Retail Design firm in the Chicagoland area where he started as a draftsman and quickly moved up to planning, merchandising and designing specialty shops.
For over three decades, Mark has been involved in the world of retail planning, design and construction. He has managed an impressive array of retail projects including unique specialty stores, large department stores and regional malls.
In 1995, Mark ventured off on his own and started Johnson Design Group. He was fortunate to have developed relationships that began early in his career. Through those relationships, Mark was given the opportunity to provide service to many of the same retailers he worked for such as Caron Pirie Scott. These relationships, some of which still remain today, have been key to the growth and success of Johnson Design Group and have allowed the company to prosper.
Given this growth, JDG has had the opportunity to hire a unique group of individuals that work closely as a team to bring innovative, cost effective solutions to each project they are awarded. They focus on each client’s individual needs and act as an extension of their team. New technology is always at the forefront of the list to improve the process and discover new ways to advance the design possibilities.
Clients have praised Mark’s hands-on approach in store planning, merchandising, interior design and project management - managing the process from concept to construction.
Some fun facts about Mark: He is an avid sailor & enjoys restoring antique cars.
